If you find yourself atop Monte Brè in Lugano, Switzerland, there are two restaurants that offer breathtaking views of the surroundings. One of them, Restaurant Vetta, boasts an outdoor terrace that provides the most splendid vista from the peak. However, despite the stunning scenery, reviews suggest that the quality of food might leave something to be desired.
Fortunately, there is another option in the form of Osteria Funicolare. With its own outdoor terrace offering a delightful view, this restaurant also delivers delicious food. During our visit, we chose Osteria Funicolare for dinner and were pleasantly surprised by the fantastic dining experience.
If you're looking to pair exquisite scenery with a memorable meal atop Monte Brè, Osteria Funicolare comes highly recommended and ensures you won't be disappointed with their culinary offerings.
Arriving at the Destination: The destination is well-marked as 'Cassarate' on Google Maps, easy to find. You can choose to enjoy a refreshing walk along the waterfront, or easily reach it by catching bus number 2 servicing the route Cassarate Monte Brè.

Gandria | Best things to do in Lugano
Here is the link to the official website which lists the ferry schedule. It’s complicated, since each boat has a slightly different route and timetable. As for purchasing tickets, you can do so online in advance, at the ticket booths at each port, or on board the boat. If you are not sure which ferry to take, I recommend speaking with the staff at the ferry port.
What We Did: We took the bus to Monte San Salvatore, hiked to Carona and then to Melide, and rode the boat back to Lugano, seeing Campione d’Italia along the way. We ended the day with a second round-trip ferry ride to Gandria.

PRO TRAVEL TIP: It's advisable to check the operating hours of the restaurants before your visit to Gandria. Regrettably, we had an unfortunate experience of arriving on a Tuesday, when most eateries were closed for the day.

The Museum of Hermann Hesse

Unlike Monte Brè, we found ourselves particularly captivated by the vista from here. Not only does it provide a sweeping view of Lake Lugano, but on clear days, the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps emerge majestically in the north.
As you ascend this picturesque mountain, be prepared to be awe-struck by the stunning natural surroundings and the feeling of serenity that envelopes you. From the peak of Monte San Salvatore, you can marvel at the intricate interplay between the shimmering waters of Lake Lugano and the verdant landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see. En route, you will encounter and stroll through the charming and colorful streets of Ciona, providing a brief diversion from the serene woodland scenery.

Carona | Best things to do in Lugano
Once in Carona, there are several restaurants where you can have lunch. Retrace your steps back to Monte San Salvatore (now it will be a slightly uphill walk) or continue to Melide, which sits at the base of San Salvatore. This part of the walk takes 45 minutes and it is a steep downhill walk through the forest. It’s not all that exciting, but you will end near Swissminiatur. Visit Swissminiatur and then take the ferry to Lugano.
IMPORTANT TIP FOR YOUR TRIP: Ensure you have an ample supply of water, especially if you plan to explore Lugano on a warm day. It's also advisable to use the restroom facilities on Monte San Salvatore before commencing your walk, as the two towns you'll pass through along the way don't seem to offer public restroom options. Additionally, please note that most restaurants in the area open for business at noon or later, so if you start your hike early, you may reach Carona before the restaurants are operational. Alternatively, there is a convenient convenience store in town where you can grab some snacks while waiting for the restaurants to open.
When embarking on your Lugano adventure, it's always wise to plan ahead, make necessary preparations, and be aware of the local amenities available. The captivating landscapes and charming towns you'll encounter along the journey will make it an unforgettable experience.
After our adventurous hike from Monte San Salvatore to Melide, we found the journey to be less satisfying than expected. However, our anticipation to catch the ferry back to Lugano kept us patient as we waited for an hour and a half. While there may not be a plethora of activities in Melide, a visit to Swissminiatur could be an exciting option for those seeking a unique experience.
Reflecting on our trip, we have learned valuable lessons. If given the chance, we would rearrange our itinerary and return to Monte San Salvatore from Carona, enjoying the picturesque views along the way. To conclude our trip on a high note, we would then take the funicular back to Paradiso, relishing in the convenience and stunning scenery.

This expansive park spans a total area of 63,000 square meters and is situated along the picturesque shoreline of Lake Lugano. At its heart is the magnificent Villa Ciani, surrounded by a network of scenic walking trails, meticulously maintained lawns, vibrant flower beds, and a diverse collection of trees sourced from various parts of the world.

The bonus of the entire terminal being roofed is the convenience of a dry wait on a rainy day.

The cuisine in Lugano represents a captivating fusion of Swiss and Italian flavors, predominantly highlighting ingredients typical of Italy. Expect to find dishes such as pasta and pizza, and of course, the region's spectacular red wine, appearing across numerous local menus.
The Ristorante Trattoria Galleria: This exquisite, albeit somewhat premium, restaurant is renowned for its offerings of Italian seafood and pasta dishes. Nestled near the heart of the city, it possesses a quaint location within a charming arcade where patrons can enjoy alfresco dining sheltered by the gallery. Grotto Morchino: Garnering consistent high ratings, this establishment serves an array of delectable Swiss and Italian dishes wrapped in a warm, homey ambiance. The restaurant's Osso Bucco and chestnut cake often receive high praise from satisfied customers. A culinary experience at Ristorante le Bucce di Gandria. Regarded as one of Lugano's finest eateries, this jewel is tucked away in Gandria. Availing a ferry ride is necessary to reach this hidden haven. Once there, you'll be served authentic Italian delicacies whilst reveling in the scenic beauty of the lake. Sadly, the restaurant shut its doors on our visit days, i.e., Mondays and Tuesdays.
Indulge in exquisite cuisine at Ristorante Arte al Lago. The only Michelin-star restaurant in Lugano adds a touch of elegance to your dining experience. Although it's the priciest entry on this list, the unparalleled vistas of Lake Lugano and dishes brimming with lake's fish and seafood might justify that. La Fermata for comfort food. When cravings for a delectable burger and fries kick in, make your way to La Fermata. Centrally situated, this food joint is proximal to Parco Civico-Ciani and Monte Brè's funicular.
In addition to these, Lugano is also home to Pizzeria Argentino, known for its thin-crust pizzas, and Vanini 1871, a go-to spot for chocolate and coffee lovers.

LUXURY OPTION: Hotel City Lugano. This was our chosen accommodation. Regrettably, our experience did not quite match the hotel's 4-star classification, giving it more of a middle-grade ambiance. Our stay aligned with the climax of the 2019 heatwave, in July, spanning four nights. During our time, the cooling systems in both our rooms performed below standard, limping through the high temperatures. When we brought these up with the hotel staff, the recurring issue had no immediate remedy. Our advice for summer trips to Lugano is to explore other options. However, the spacious rooms, top-notch breakfast, and strategic location in a peaceful neighborhood make it an excellent winter getaway or a nice choice once the air-conditioning problem is rectified.
FOR THE MODERATE SPENDER: The next stop on your itinerary should be at the Continental Parkhotel. Positioned conveniently beside the railway station, a short stroll gets you to the shores of Lake Lugano. Every room is furnished with an air conditioner and soundproofed against noise. They're designed for a group of two, with the upper-level rooms offering an enchanting view of Lake Lugano.
HOMELY AND SPACIOUS: For a group of up to six, the Modern Apartment in Lugano comes highly recommended. Situated a bit away from the city center, it's an ideal choice if you have a car at your disposal, as parking is freely offered. The apartment is renowned for its spaciousness, modern design, and positive reviews.
COST-EFFECTIVE: For those watching their budget, the Lugano Savosa Youth Hostel offers solid value. Although it is outside the main city area, the hostel boasts a generous outdoor pool, a spacious garden, and fun activities like volleyball, badminton, and table tennis. You can choose rooms with either a private or shared bathroom. On top, all patrons are granted complimentary use of public transport.
