State Files Suit To Close Drum Recycler
November 10, 2002

The state attorney general's office has filed suit against a recycler of steel drums in an effort to temporarily shut it down in response to years of complaints from neighbors.

The lawsuit was filed in Franklin County Environmental Court against Columbus Steel Drum Company of Gahanna and its parent company, Container Recyclers of Cincinnati.

The attorney general is asking the court to issue a temporary injunction to close the business until it's cleaned up, as well as a penalty of 25,000 for each day the company has been in violation of state standards since January 2001.

Court documents say the company has been releasing "natural gas-like" or "burnt paint" smells that endanger people's health.

Ed Paul, principal owner of Container Recyclers, says he's surprised by the lawsuit.
