Kaptur Enters Race For House Leadership Post
November 13, 2002

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-9, Toledo) has jumped into the race for House Democratic leader, challenging California Representative Nancy Pelosi and Representative Harold Ford Junior of Tennessee.

Kaptur says she'll urge House Democrats to postpone tomorrow's leadership vote. The ten-term congresswoman says the caucus needs to stop acting as a "cheerleading organization for the campaign industry."

The 56-year-old Kaptur has a strong independent streak, taking on Democrats and Republicans alike.

She says the structure of the Democratic Party must be overhauled and should focus on economic, political and campaign finance reform, rather than ideology.
