Xavier Falls To Stanford In Preseason Matchup
November 21, 2002

Stanford made a strong bid for returning to the AP Top-25 by upsetting eleventh-ranked Xavier 63-62 in the quarterfinals of the Preseason NIT last night.

Stanford was not in the preseason AP poll -- the first time the school had missed out in 94 weeks.

The Cardinals advanced to the Preseason NIT semifinals next Wednesday at New York's Madison Square Garden against the winner of tonight's second-round game between Eastern Illinois and Number-eight Florida.

Julius Barnes scored 14 points, including two free throws with 27 seconds left to play, and Stanford ran out the clock.

Lionel Chalmers led the Musketeers with 20 points, 14 in the second half as Xavier came back after a poor start.
