Cleveland's annual Harborfest celebration kicks off today with a floating parade. Seventeen "tall ships" from around the world will sail into Cleveland Wednesday afternoon. Thousands of people, both afloat and on shore, are expected to watch the Parade of Sail, the event kicking off Cleveland's Harborfest. This year's Harborfest is one of the Signature Events of the Ohio Bicentennial. The tall ships represent maritime history from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, Great Lakes trading schooners, 17th-century Boston schooners, and more. A U.S. Coast Guard unit from Texas will be on hand to provide security for the vessels.
Harborfest is a four-day festival of events including concerts, entertainment, and a number of exhibits and displays. The tall ships will cruise into other Ohio Ports later this month.
Watching the Parade of Sail
If you want to watch Wednesday's parade in person, organizers recommend boaters be in place by 3:00 p.m. For those viewing from land, you can watch at Voinovich Bicentennial Park. Admission for the park is $3. However, other venues along the lakefront are free.
